Raise3D Pro3 HS Accelerates Bespoke Motorcycle Development, Enables Printing of End-Use Carbon Fiber Parts

Juil 16, 2024

The new Raise3D Pro3 Plus HS is helping Droog Moto revolutionize the motorcycle industry with their custom bespoke motorcycles. By providing advanced high-speed composite printing capabilities, including high-speed carbon fiber printing, the Pro3 Plus HS allows Droog to produce both prototypes and composite end-use parts at unparalleled speeds.

This case study explores how the Pro3 HS series transforms the prototype and development cycle with printing speeds of up to 300 mm/s, even when printing carbon fiber parts. Additionally, it takes a look at how Droog Moto is using the Pro3 Plus HS to produce end-use carbon fiber parts for their motorcycles. For both prototypes and end-use parts, the Pro3 HS series’ high precision and accuracy allows for repeatable batch printing and simplifies the process of producing fitted components.

Company Background

Droog Moto is a bespoke motorcycle company renowned for its cutting-edge and highly personalized designs. Because of Droog’s commitment to innovation and because each motorcycle is catered to the individual client, prototypes are extremely important, and saving time on prototype production means significant savings on overall costs.

Challenges of Traditional Motorcycle Development and Production

  1. Time-to-Market Pressure: Traditional prototyping methods are time-consuming compared to 3D printing. Co-owner Max Droog notes, “We don’t like a lot of down time especially when we’re trying to keep up with our schedule and coming up with new components.”
  2. Material Strength: The need for durable and lightweight components for motorcycles necessitates the use of advanced materials like carbon fiber, which Droog notes is often slow to 3D print.
  3. Cost Efficiency: For a small business, it can be difficult to balance production costs with the need for rapid prototyping and small batch production of end-use parts.

Solution: Raise3D provided Droog Moto with a Pro3 Plus HS capable of at speeds of up to 300 mm/s. These printers are specifically designed to handle composite materials, including carbon fiber materials such as Raise3D Hyper Core ABS CF15, which are essential for manufacturing strong, lightweight motorcycle parts.

Implementation of Pro3 Plus HS Rapid Composite Printing in Motorcycle Production

  1. Rapid Prototyping

Droog Moto integrates the Pro3 Plus HS into their prototype and development. The high-speed printing capabilities allow for the quick turnaround of prototypes, enabling faster iterations and design refinements. Droog prints their prototypes using Raise3D Hyper Speed PLA, which is specifically designed for Hyper FFF printing.

When it comes to other 3D printers, Droog points out that hours of print time can be spent on prototype parts that will end up being shelved. In comparison, the Pro3 HS series prints at 300 mm/s. Droog states that “it’s about four times faster than a lot of other printers can print at, especially doing carbon fiber type materials.”

  1. End-Use Parts Production

The Pro3 HS’s ability to print carbon fiber at rapid speeds means that Droog Moto can produce end-use parts that meet the performance standards required for motorcycles. This includes covers, filters, and other mechanical and aesthetic components.

Droog was able to print an end-use magnetic cover for a motorcycle using Raise3D Hyper Core ABS CF15. “It has all the holes for magnetic inserts and everything, flawless quality. Again, on something that you’re usually printing ABS, you’re having to print very slow, 40 to 50 millimeters a second, and a lot of setup. The Pro3 Plus printer banged this out.”

Droog Moto can produce end-use parts including the covers, filters, and other mechanical and aesthetic components.

Benefits of Rapid Composite 3D Printing for Motorcycle Production

  1. Reduced Lead Times: The high-speed printing significantly cuts down the time required for prototyping, allowing Droog to keep up with a rapid development and production schedule.
  2. Flexible Production: Because the Pro3 HS series is optimized for composite printing, the same high-speed machine can be used for both prototyping and end-use parts.
  3. High Quality Parts: Finding the right 3D printer can be a challenge between high-speed printing and high quality results. However, using the Pro3 Plus HS, Droog was able to print parts at high speeds of 300 mm/s without any loss in quality.
  4. Accuracy and Precision: In addition to their quality, the parts are also precise. Different components printed separately are able to fit together easily. The Pro3 HS has increased precision and accuracy even at high speeds thanks to a closed-loop stepper motor that increases the machine’s overall stability.
  5. Improved Innovation: Thanks to faster prototyping, Droog has the potential to experiment with more innovative concepts and swiftly implement changes based on testing and feedback.

Leveraging Rapid Composite 3D Printing for Faster Development and Production

The Raise3D Pro3 Plus HS has enabled Droog Moto to accelerate the prototype cycle and production while keeping to a high-quality standard. Whether it’s prototypes or end-use parts, the Pro3 HS series printer provides fast, precise, and reliable results. With the ability to handle composite materials like ABS CF15, PPA CF25, and PPA GF25 at speeds up to 300 mm/s, the new Raise3D Pro3 HS series is a valuable asset in Droog’s pursuit of innovation and excellence in the motorcycle industry.
